Is Jay Gatsby a hero or a bum?

In Nick's eyes he was a hero, and he did take the blame for the accident to protect Daisy, but in reality he was neither. He possessed simplicity, humility, and grace, but he was so in love with Daisy that it influenced his every action, and ultimately causing his death.
