Walking or running at intervals?

High Intensity Interval training works. You need to do at least one full minute of maximum effort followed by about four minutes of sustained effort that is much more subdued. 30-45 minutes of this at least four days a week with a reduced calorie diet will yeild good results for weight loss. Walking would be your four minutes of sustained low impact and running full out is your one minute of maximum effort.
